Prince Shotoku was a prince, or a regent. A regent is when someone rules for another person for a time because the rightful heir to the throne is either female or too young to rule, so prince Shotoku was a regent for his aunt. Prince Shotoku was greatly influenced by China. He was pleased with the culture of china, and he sent people there to learn about China more. He sent scholar officials and also invited or took Chinese skilled workers to japan. He was also very interested in Confucianism, which was china's religion at the time. But instead, he changed it a bit into obedience and hard work instead of respect. this was called 7teen article constitution. later on though Buddhism came along. |
